Types of Hiking

For those individuals who enjoy the great outdoors, there are plenty of different ways to do this. One of the favorites of many is by going hiking. For those who are new to this activity, they don’t realize that there are different types of hiking. Which type to enjoy is one of the first decisions that the new hiker will have to make.

Close to Home Hikes

Most will find that when they want to experience some hiking adventures, they don’t have to go far from home to do so. It means checking out some local hiking locations which are easy to access.

Peak Bagging

For those who are familiar with hiking, then they may be aware of the term peak-bagging. This is when a hiker has the mandate of reaching the peak of each mountain in a collection which they have chosen to tackle. Once they accomplish this, then they can pat themselves on the back for meeting this type of hiking challenge. Peak-bagging became popular way back in the early 1900s.

Bushwhacking

For hikers who are really up for an adventure, then they will want to try bushwhacking. This is hiking off trails. It requires some real skills and the ability to rely on essential resources such as:

  • Maps
  • Navigation skills
  • Compasses

To be involved in a real bushwhacking hike, it means going on trails which have never been explored before. This type of hiking is far more strenuous compared to other types. It should never be attempted by the novice hiker.

Base Camp Hiking

The name sort of gives this type of hiking experience away. Basically, it means going on an event which is going to consist of one overnight stay in a camp that has to be set up by the hikers. The camp remains in place until the hikers have finished their trek and return to base. This is a favorite of many hikers, and there are some locations where this is well known, such as the Adirondacks for example.

Long Distance Hiking

Many seasoned hikers want to make the most of every hiking adventure they participate in. For them, the ultimate is long-distance hiking. Each hiker will have their own definitions as to what a long hike is. Generally speaking, it is a hiking event which encompasses at least two nights.

Thru-Hiking

Thru-hiking is for those who are intent on seeing a hiking event through from start to finish. It means that the hiker has finished hiking the entire trail. Aside from these, there are several other types of events such as section hiking and day hiking.

With so many different types of hiking events, it is no wonder why hikers never get bored.
